Get closer

I’m one of those people who always has disastrous haircuts. I’ve tried everything from saying ‘do whatever you think is best’ to ‘nothing drastic, just a trim’. But somehow I always end up wishing I’d never crossed the hairdresser’s threshold let alone allowed anyone near me wielding a pair of extremely sharp scissors.

With this in mind it was with some trepidation that I went to Base Cuts in Portobello Road, but it had been nearly a year and even I realised that anything was better than the split ends I was sporting.

And finally I’ve found a hairdressing salon which I’ll go back to again and again. It’s light, airy, trendy without being intimidating and feels completely individual with its huge mirrors and funky music playing.

I was looked after by Cameron, the manager, and he is truly amazing – I’d propose if either of us were single! He adores his job and has masses of experience and those qualities make him well worth returning to again and again.

He was thorough beforehand, explaining that for the shape of my face and the texture of my hair I should lose some length and have a few layers put in.

He also discussed colour, explaining that however much I fancied being blonde it wouldn’t actually suit my skin tone!

We compromised on some gold and honey coloured highlights. I couldn’t believe how thorough he was, it felt as though he considered every individual strand of hair – and yet he was quick too.

And when it came to the cut he took it slowly and instilled confidence in me and though he cut off a fair amount, I didn’t look radically different – just far more groomed – which was exactly what I wanted.

I loved the result and for the first time ever I left a salon without wishing I had a paper bag over my head. I’ll definitely be going back there.
